Spike Island

Spike Island is an island of 103 acres in Cork Harbour, Ireland. It has a long and rich history, dating back to the 7th century when it was a monastic settlement. Over the centuries, it has been used as a fortress, a prison, and a home for various people. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction that showcases the island’s diverse and fascinating past.

The Spike Island Company is the organisation that manages and operates the island as a visitor attraction. It was established in 2016 by Cork County Council, in partnership with Fáilte Ireland, the Irish tourism authority. The company’s mission is to preserve and promote the island’s heritage, culture, and natural beauty, while providing a high-quality and memorable experience for visitors.

We are so pleased to say that we really appreciate Spike Islands generosity to our festival over the years.

The Spike Island Company offers regular tours that include a ferry ride across Cork Harbour, one of the world’s largest natural harbours, a guided tour with a storyteller, and self-guided time to explore the island’s many museums, exhibitions, and buildings. Visitors can learn about the island’s history as a monastery, a fortress, a prison, and a home, and see centuries-old prison cells, military emplacements, and modern museum spaces. They can also enjoy the island’s nature and wildlife, with two walking trails that offer stunning views of the harbour and the coastline.

The Spike Island Company also offers special tours and events, such as behind-the-scenes tours, eco-tours, school tours, after-dark tours, corporate events, weddings, and festivals. The company aims to cater to different interests and needs of visitors, while ensuring the sustainability and conservation of the island.

The Spike Island Company is proud to share the island’s unique story with the world, and to welcome visitors to discover Ireland’s historic island.
