Our festival warmly welcomes and is very grateful for the continuous and generous support provided to us by our friend John Adams. John opens his home, his studio, and his heart to the town each year during our festival, and the many visitors to our little festival truly enjoy it. Indeed, the talented artist’s generosity sees him open Coliemore – The Artist’s House to the many other cultural and creative events throughout the year in Cobh. These events are always special.
An extra special addition to the Open Mic afternoon that John is hosting for the 2023 Festival, is that lucky visitors will be able to enjoy his art exhibition on display in his studio. John has many of his works for sale, and with such variety and quality of work on display, you might arrive for poem and leave with a painting. We’d encourage anyone who is interested in art and creativity to attend. You never know what you might find.
In 2014, talented artist John Adams relocated to Cobh and undertook the restoration of a long-abandoned house, which had been derelict and uninhabited for over 30 years. He ingeniously transformed the lower ground floor into a vibrant art gallery and community cultural arts space, situated in the heart of the town, fostering the importance of art and creativity within the community.
Coliemore The Artist’s House has been the venue for numerous arts and cultural events, such as exhibitions, eclectic music evenings featuring poetry and storytelling, and performances by various theater groups and individuals. Notable artists and groups, including Julie Sharkey, John Spillane, Linda Cullen, Jimmy Crowley, Greenshine, Billy Kennedy, Dominic Moore, Colm O’Reilly, Alice Barry, visual artist Bill Griffin, the Haulbowline Theater Group, the Dagenham Yanks, and many more, have graced its stage. The venue has also hosted events like the Cobh Zero Waste Clothes Swap and ourselves the Cobh Readers and Writers Festival, further emphasizing the significance of art and creativity in the community.
During the lockdown, John repurposed the gallery as his personal studio, allowing visitors the unique opportunity to engage with the artist in his creative workspace. Here, art enthusiasts can purchase paintings directly from John, discuss the artistic process, and even commission bespoke pieces, including portraits and murals. Always eager to embrace new challenges, John continually explores diverse subjects and ideas, ensuring his art remains fresh and ever-evolving.
John also shares his passion and expertise by offering personal and group art lessons in the versatile, safe environment of his studio. These classes nurture creativity and help students develop their own artistic skills. As an experienced artist-curator, John provides invaluable guidance to clients on both personal and professional levels. His services include art purchasing advice, in-home art hanging, and personalized curation.
