Anne McSweeney

Anne is a local writer and all-round great lady. She has written many wonderful books, often connected with our Great Island, or this magnificent harbour.

A founding member of Cobh Readers and Writers, she brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the committee.  Thank you is all that we can say to this magnificent Cobh author.

Anne’s books include.

The Tip of Her Toes in the Ocean.

Anne McSweeney in her first book has written stories concerning the rich maritime history of Cobh; about local WW1 heroes, castles and their owners; the effect that emigration had on the town; amusing anecdotes about local characters etc.
Several poems and interesting photographs appear throughout the book.

Soar like an Eagle.

Soar like the Eagle tells the story about Charles Guilfoyle Doran, Architect, Scholar and Fenian who was clerk-of-works during the construction of Saint Colman’s Cathedral in Queenstown (Cobh) in the late 19th and early 20th century and died in 1909.

The story follows on with the lives of his widow, Elizabeth Barlow Doran and their surviving ten children and includes many family photos heretofore unpublished

Watching the Wild Waves Motion.

Following the success of “The Tips of Her Toes in the Ocean” Anne McSweeney published her second book “Watching The Wild Waves Motion” in much the same vein.
Each story in this book of short stories can be read in isolation, so you can pick and choose where you want to start.

The Road From Walterstown Castle to The House of Windsor.

Anne McSweeney’s officially launched this booklet ‘The Road From Walterstown Castle To The House of Windsor’, during the Cobh Readers and Writers Festival 2017. It chronicles the lives of the Lavallin family of Walterstown Castle, Great Island, (Cobh) – ancestors of Lady Diana Spencer.

On the Rocks.

Anne recently published a new book “ON THE ROCKS” the story of the grounding of the liner RMS CELTIC at Roches Point in 1928, and the effects of the tragedy that followed during the salvage operation in 1929 had on Cobh and the inner harbour.

Now if you are anything like us, you will most likely want to know where you can buy these great books.

We are going to chase down those details and place them here for you all as soon as we can.
